About the Role

Reporting to the Senior Safety Advisor the successful candidate will support a safe and collaborative work environment by actively coaching, guiding, and assisting frontline workers and line leaders in the application of safety procedures and tools. The role promotes consistent safety practices, supports compliance with site requirements, and contributes to continuous improvement through visible, practical safety support in shutdown environments.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • provide visible and proactive safety leadership during shutdown activities, supporting frontline workers, supervisors and contractors to safely manage elevated risk environments and compressed work schedules;
  • verify implementation and compliance of Isolation and Permit to Work systems, including energy isolation, confined space, hot work, working at heights, lifting operations and electrical work prior to task commencement;
  • conduct field verifications to confirm shutdown risk assessments (SWMS/JHA), critical controls and permit conditions are correctly implemented before work proceeds;
  • assist and coach shutdown supervisors and contractor leads in conducting field inspections, ensuring critical risks are identified, controlled and continuously monitored during execution;
  • monitor simultaneous operations (SIMOPS) and high contractor density environments to ensure task interaction risks are identified and managed effectively;
  • participate in and support shutdown pre-start meetings and toolbox talks, reinforcing risk awareness, fatigue management, and escalation pathways during high workload periods;
  • conduct task interactions and targeted safety observations focusing on critical risk activities (e.g., confined space, working at heights, lifting, live plant interfaces, mobile equipment interaction); and
  • conduct shutdown specific audits and compliance checks.

 

About the Candidate:

  • Cert IV or Diploma in Work Health and Safety (e.g., BSB51319 Diploma of Work Health and Safety or equivalent);
  • training in incident investigation methodologies (e.g., ICAM or Taproot);
  • BSB50920 Diploma of Quality Auditing (desirable);
  • minimum 2 years’ experience in surface mining, processing and/or Shutdown environments;
  • strong hazard identification and risk assessment skills relevant to shutdown environments;
  • well-developed change management, influencing, and advocacy skills; and
  • developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the workforce
